Inadequate Safety Study for Thompson Road Improvements

Updated: Jul 2, 2023

Comment on "Online Open House" by tomorrow, 6/29/23

Incorrect and incomplete crash data. In our reading, the traffic study underreports ODOT-recorded crashes at the NW Hibbard Dr. & NW Thompson Road intersection 2016-2020 and does not address the crashes that happened here in 2021 and 2022. For example, neighbors are aware of two accidents at this intersection 2021-2022.

Missing information about safety impacts of approved new development. After preventing community appeals in violation of state law and county code - the county approved a new development in the Thompson Rd. curve. In this open house the county still does not address important safety issues this development raises, and does not include access to the development in its open house renderings.

The community needs information about:

- proposed entrance from approved new development

- sight distance

- impact of new closely-spaced access on traffic flow and safety

- planned pedestrian crossing at NW 126th Ave. & NW Thompson Road

No analysis of impacts of planned major realignment of NW Thompson Rd. immediately to the west on traffic speed, flow, and driver expectations.

No robust plan that details safety features to "make up" for the fact that despite its high cost, the proposed roadway will not meet minimum county safety standards. The county mentions keeping the current curve warning speed signs as a way to address not meeting safety standards, although it has been consistently shown that drivers do not respond to these. We wonder if the county should consider reducing the posted speed of this segment of roadway to match its design and to match the posted speed for the proposed realigned roadway to the west, but this is not discussed in this open house. And, the county mentions possibly changing the superelevation or tilt of the roadway, but does not offer information about where and whether this is planned or the degree to which this may mitigate the substandard roadway features:

- road too curved (and future/proposed travel lanes seem more sharply curved)

- inadequate right of way for future improvements

- Alternative 2 paved roadway is too narrow

Edited July 2, 2023 to clarify question about posted speed and design speed
